What is Fascia you ask?

Fascia is the connective tissue that encloses your muscles, blood vessels, nerves, and internal organs.  It’s function varies from:

1. Creating a surface for muscles to smoothly glide over one another.

2. Binding certain muscles together and suspending structure.

3. Transmitting forces and allowing movement from muscles and bones.

4. Provide a flexible wrapper over nerves and blood vessels as they course through the body.

Muscles and fascia together are known as the myofascial system.  For various reasons such as disuse, over-use, muscle imbalance, or simply dehydration, the muscles in our body and the overlying fascia can become stuck together, or form an adhesion.  When this happens, it can cause limitations in function such as reduction in range of motion, altering stress patterns within the body, dysfunctional movement patterns, and can result ultimately in reduced performance or pain.

Don’t ignore your fascia.  Using a foam roller and foam rolling and stretching after a brief warm-up or after a workout for a only a few minutes can provide a myofascial release and keep your fascia happy!  Keep on rollin’.
